Preparing to upgrade to Microsoft Visio 2013/2016

Microsoft introduced a new file format in Visio 2013 (VSDM and VSDX) which replaces the format used in Visio 2010 and Visio 2007 (VDX). The new file format means that all the components needed by Visio are stored in a zip file, as opposed to text files for the VDX format. Generally, this means that a file that would be around 1.5 MB in size as a VDX, would be around 400KB as a VSDM.

Visio 2010 cannot work with VSDM or VSDX, and Visio 2013 can't work in VDX, in ways that are compatible with Process Navigator, so it is NOT possible to use a mixture of different Visio versions.

As a result, if you wish to upgrade, for example from Visio 2010 to Visio 2013, all machines (including servers) using Triaster software will need to be on the same version of Visio, and the latest Triaster software.

The scope of the upgrade therefore needs to cover:

  • Visio on Map Author desktops
  • Process Navigator on desktops
  • Visio on the server
  • Triaster Solution up on the server: Process Navigator and Triaster Server
  • Stencil and Template
  • All process maps

The Triaster technical implementation team will upgrade:

  • Triaster solution on the Triaster server: Process Navigator and Triaster Server
  • Stencil and Template
  • All process maps

However this will require coordination with your internal IT who will need to upgrade the following at the same time:

  • Visio on Map Author desktops
  • Process Navigator on desktops
  • Visio on the server

The upgrade will take some time therefore, during which your Process Library will need to be frozen, with, for example, no new process maps created, approved or published. In addition no maps can be out for approval. Accordingly the upgrade will have to be scheduled to take place over a period which is convenient for Users, the Library Administrator and your internal IT.

NOTE: SP1 for Visio 2013 should be used as it resolves an issue where the display of text in published maps is of poor quality.
